The thing that surprised me the most about Netflix’s One Piece live-action series was how it wasn’t just a SparkNotes summary of the source material’s first major arc. Instead, it added its own twists to Oda’s epic and put the spotlight on one of the series’ more subtle relationships: that between Admiral Garp (Vincent Regan) and marine recruit Koby (Morgan Davies).

Throughout the season, this storyline is balanced by the Marines’ chase of the Straw Hats as they sail toward the Grand Line. People who like the manga and anime versions of One Piece, like me, know that the two characters will eventually form an unbreakable bond. However, we never get to see how this happens, except for a few random comic panels that appear between later arcs. Luckily, the Netflix show is more than happy to spend time showing how their good friendship began in a simple way.

In the live-action shows, Garp gives Koby a sense of agency by telling him to get out of his own head and trust his gut feelings. In one of the first scenes, Garp teaches Koby this lesson over a game of Go, which Koby wins after taking Garp’s advice to heart. On the surface, this scene doesn’t seem important, but it helps fill in the anime’s gaps about Koby’s quick and awesome change from a shy wimp to one of the strongest Marines.

All of this comes to a head when Koby decides to ignore Garp’s orders to arrest Luffy because he thinks his friend is a good pirate, which is something marines are taught doesn’t exist. Garp doesn’t scold Koby. Instead, he thanked him for being honest and doing what he thought was right.

Garp and Koby’s talks don’t feel like fluff or fan fiction on steroids. Instead, they build on the series’ long-running theme about letting go of worries to follow your dreams. Koby’s dream job is to be a good marine.

Even though the show does a great job of showing how the Straw Hats’ friendship is growing, Garp and Koby’s relationship steals the show. It makes me want to see other relationships in the live-action show explored more deeply if it gets a second season.
